Mungilaluk, Bear Man
Eli Nasogaluak Tuktoyaktuk
19" H 12" W 9" Deep

Eli sent me this statement about his piece:
"This carving is made from black soapstone all in one piece. The bear formed by Mungilaluk's hair and also the legs forming back into the bear represents Mungilaluk's strength which our fathers say is where he receives it. Mungilaluk is an actual Inuvialuit leader who died in 1940. He was the last of the original leaders before the government system came in. He lived around Hershel Island and Tuktoyaktuk area. He was a very strong man with great physical strength. Many stories are told of his feats of strength to help his people. It is told that he refused to sign a treaty with the government."
